which was in part a response to this bug report:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=527191
and the incorrect syntax used masked the issue until Andrew Ruder's
patch caught it out. This one is beyond me so I hope that Steve or
Colin can have a look?
