What I'm tempted to do next is some more refactoring of variable
usage to make it absolutely clear where numbers are expected to be
padded and not. The current code is *very* hard to follow in places
because of this. There's also a bug open
(https://abcde.einval.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=64) complaining
about not being able to remove padding, which is a fair point...
