Hi Dave (Joc?),
Welcome to the world of Linux!
It sounds like you're trying to install from source -- i.e. downloading
an abcde repository and using its scripts to install onto your system.
That's absolutely a possibility, but is usually only necessary if you
need the very latest version, or if the program you're trying to
install is not available in your distribution (Linux Mint, in your
case). Doing this will require figuring out the package's build/install
dependencies and installing them first.
The easier way, and the one that I would recommend you stick with
whenever possible, is to install through your distribution's package
manager. Abcde is popular enough that it will be available in most
distributions, and that is indeed the case for Linux Mint.
Linux Mint has a user-friendly graphical tool called "Software
Manager", where you can search for and install programs. It will
automatically install its dependencies as well, so you don't have to
worry about that. All you need to do is search for abcde in Software
Manager, and choose to install it.
I hope this helps. Have fun!
