So there's clearly a problem with I/O. The system is just about
running usably for now, but any sustained disk access is causing
problems. There's nothing to see in the logs. :-(

I'm going to visit the DC again tomorrow, power off and re-seat all
the drives in the hope that might be the problem. Fingers crossed.
