It's not clear to me how that does anything make doesn't already
do. Which we already have, and various rules for input and ouput
files/documents. I'm fine with doing more things with make and keeping
reasonably independent pieces nicely separate and file-based, but I'm
not sure the youth agree - they want databases, shiny logins and no
version control.

I don't see what the point of replacing standard make with snakemake
is, but perhaps I'm missing something. It is at least available in
debian/ubuntu so it's easy to try. Ultimately whoever is doing the
work can do whatever they like, but each new tool adds a comprehension
overhead. Is this one worth it?

Personally this year I plan to spend as little time as possible on the
system, and only fix the data, which is now in a much worse state than
the system.
