[Expo-tech] persistent offender - duplicate filenames -Olympus cameras

This is what I was looking for, though I couldn't have put it into words
before I found it.
Olympus cameras are the persistent offender in not giving us clean and
unique filenames:

photos/2007/DaveLoeffler/ p8030001.jpg 
photos/2005/DaveLoeffler/ p8030001.jpg
photos/2007/DaveLoeffler/ P8030001.JPG
photos/2008/FrankTully/ P8030001.JPG

The older photos use lowercase and the later uppercase

EXIF says these are all Olympus cameras, and Dave has a different camera
from Frank.
But Dave is using the same camera so I don't see how the lowercase/uppercase
thing happened unless it was a firmware update.
with 7 digits to play with, is it too much to ask Olympus to have firmware
that doesn't generate name clashes so often ? Out of 10 million possible
names, even before they use something other than 'P' for the initial letter?
