Seems quite likely. The arelist ARGE repo I have on this machine goes
back to 2012, so no help. Everything before that was sending over
patches or whole datasets to compare/merge. I might well be able to
find such a sent-over dataset, but would have to dig out some earlier
storage (my main backup machine died so the discs are offline).

It would probably still come as a big lump, so probably not worth
worrying about.

Sounds good. I have discovered that bfg is two orders of magnitude
faster than git-filter-branch, but also doesn't understand paths so
isn't much use for non-unique leafnames inluess you dig out the blob ID
yourself and do it that way.
