That was partly why 'edit this page' and tinyMCE were put in in the
first place. And the principle is good, but the way tinyMCE completely
buggers up any page it touches is quite a heavy price to pay.

I do find it ironic that the people who use HTML as a way of life
don't actually know what it looks like. (and are happy to edit wierdo
specialist formats like .svx but not ubiquitous ones like .html)

Yes. It's a real problem. It would be reduced if the functionality to
actually check in changes was completed, but at the moment an
edit-this-page edit just leaves a changed file on the server, which a
nerd has to notice and check in. That's OK, but one wants to see
what the change is before check-in to give it a sanity-check, not
least because we had some spam recently with dodgy ads overwriting the
chargers page. TinyMCE's total reformat makes it extremely
difficult to see what was changed.

It's also a pain when you come back later looking at changes which
does happen reasonably often in things like cave
descriptions. Obviously it is survivable, and we're prepared to put up
with some pain to enable easy 'numpty-editing', but I find it hard to
believe there is no such thing as a javascript editor with a wysiwgy
mode that will also largely preserve lines.

There is a list here of editors, to see if any of the others work any better in this regard.
