Thanks for your reply, Riku! I will try the idea you gave.

So I wasn't able to install with the mini installer from 10th aug
(with the same error), but the 12th Aug one went through - is it
possible that the kernel used in 12th aug installer is 'newer' than
the one that got installed on the system? If so, is there an easy way
to update the installed kernel?
(Apologies for naive-sounding questions, but I am fairly new to the
uefi+ system in debian, so any help is appreciated! :) )
