[Expo-tech] Redesign: Changing cave numbers

Long term, when we redesign troggle, we should move to a system with immutable, internal, hidden identifiers.

This is the standard approach for this sort of problem… since about 1986.

Then we would have a “display-name” field which is altered in only one place where we would change

(1623)“2018-dm-07”

to

(1626)“359”

(We are still suffering from an incomplete redesign from the days of spreadsheet+perl in the early 2000s where the data structure mapped the cave data directly.)

Or more constructively, I suggest that we *add* a new “display-name” field and treat the originally assigned CUCC name as the immutable one which becomes hidden if the display name is set.

Which will make updating the cave descriptions a bit harder of course, as directly editing the folder tree will be using the old immutable identifiers and not the current kataster names.

But we need to do something serious about that anyway – basically only Wookey is practiced at doing this currently. Just resigning the form to modern guidelines (such as gov.uk) would help immensely, and adding drag-and-drop to uploaded text fragments and folders would remove all the remaining confusion.

The documentation for adding/editing a cave and its entrances is only one handbook page:

http://expo.survex.com/handbook/survey/caveentry.html

and then

http://expo.survex.com/handbook/survey/newcavefile.html

for the checkout-edit-and-recommit-using-git method.

Expanding this documentation is on the to-do list*, but it needs someone who is new to it, and grappling with it for the first time, to write up their experiences and improve this webpage.

It would probably save a lot of grief for everyone if you and/or Phil could do the renaming / reorganising of the caves that are on my list, thanks, PLUS Organhoehle which wasn't on my list but which now should be 1623/283.
